The non-governmental organization (NGO) Water Aid warns of the impact that climate change is having on the Greater Maputo region (Maputo city, Matola and Boane) in particular.
According to the results recently carried out in the region, the organization speaks of an "increasingly unpredictable" situation with signs of "devastating consequences" resulting from a combination of periods of prolonged drought and floods.
"Dry periods seem to last longer than wet ones and the number of dry months increased slightly between 1982-2002 and 2003-2023, while the number of wet months decreased by two-thirds," reveals the study, quoted by Terra magazine.
In a press release, the organization's Executive Director, Tim Wainwright, characterized the situation in Mozambique as "a chaotic mix of both extreme conditions" in reference to the floods and droughts.
For his part, the director of that NGO at national level, Mozambique is at the forefront in terms of the impacts of climate change, and therefore advocates access to more funds for climate adaptation.
"Despite not contributing much in terms of global emissions, Mozambique is at the forefront in terms of the impact of climate change. This injustice needs to be addressed at COP-28 to facilitate the opening of more adaptation funds for countries like Mozambique to invest in resilient water and sanitation services," said the source, quoted in the press release.
