The deputy director-general of the National Institute of Health (INS), Eduardo Samo Gudo, warns that the fourth wave of Covid-19 is lurking in the country due to the circulation of the Ómicron variant.
According to Eduardo Samo Gudo the first results of ongoing retrospective epidemiological studies in South Africa to understand the risk of SARS-CoV-2 re-infection in people who have already had Covid-19 in the context of Omicron circulation are already starting to be released.
However, the source explains that these early results show that there is an increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection due to the Omicron variant, which calls attention to the need for strengthening prevention measures and vaccination adherence for everyone, including those who have already had Covid-19.
"Adherence to vaccination is critical to mitigate the impact of Omicron and the fourth wave in Mozambique. Inoculation remains a powerful tool to protect against severe forms of Covid-19 regardless of variant," argues the INS deputy director-general.
