A total of 2,700 people arrested as part of the demonstrations against electoral fraud have been released from judicial custody thanks to the intervention of the Mozambican Bar Association (OAM).
Carlos Martins, the President of the OAM, explained that the majority of the citizens were detained without proceedings having been opened against them and for others there was no proof of the charges. Some citizens did not even take part in the demonstrations, but were detained.
For the lawyers, the largest number of detentions "were illegal", and the courts even recognized that due to the lack of evidence, people could not be held in detention.
The lawyers have made various contacts available so that citizens who need legal support can contact them and present their cases as part of the demonstrations.
On the other hand, the OAM says it is following up the cases of those injured by the police and who are in hospital.
