The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, has sent a message of congratulations to the newly appointed president of Botswana, Duma Boko.
In his message, Nyusi praised the orderly and peaceful atmosphere that characterized the country's elections. For him, it was a sign of democratic maturity. He wished Boko success in the cycle of governance, which represents a new era in Botswana.
The Mozambican president said that the country was willing to work with Boko to strengthen cooperative relations.
Duma Boko of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDU) won a parliamentary majority in the October 30 elections. The Chief Justice of Botswana, Terence Rannowane, declared Boko President-elect. Public inauguration ceremonies are still pending.
Mozambique held its general elections on October 9, before Botswana. To date, the Constitutional Council (CC) has not released the final results. The results centralized by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) point to victory for the Frelimo candidate, Daniel Chapo. Independent candidate Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the Podemos party, claims victory. The CC ordered the CNE to present original tabulation notices of the results obtained at all polling stations up to the provincial level in seven provinces. The CC gave the CNE eight days to present the content of the request. The country is experiencing prolonged demonstrations against the alleged electoral fraud in favor of Frelimo. Several people have been killed as a result of the demonstrations. The police have fired real bullets at the demonstrators. Some police officers have died during the demonstrations. There are rumors of the presence of Rwandan military personnel in the city of Maputo to repel the marches, escort the President of the Republic, and garrison Mozambican ministries.
