The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, argued this Thursday in Niassa that the fight against drugs in Mozambique requires cooperation with other countries.

According to Nyusi, drug use harms families and the country's economy, causing poor development. Young people between the ages of 21 and 30 are the biggest drug usershe said.

"This scenario leaves young people vulnerable, as it contributes to the adoption of antisocial behavior that endangers their physical and mental health. That's why it requires the intervention of various actors," he said.

The President of the Republic was speaking at the inauguration of the Niassa Provincial Judicial Court building, an infrastructure that cost 256 million meticais.

Refers the News that the Supreme Court's statistics show that the trafficking and consumption of hard drugs in Mozambique is on the rise. In 2021, 491 cases were brought against drug traffickers. In 2022, the number rose to 659, and 964 the following year.

International drug trafficking has led to the arrest of Mozambicans in Angola, IndiaQatar, China, Ethiopia, Thailand, Portugal, Brazil and Zambia.

The year 2024 began with the seizure of 472 kg of heroin on the island of Mozambique and 430 kg of methamphetamine in the province of Inhambane, according to the President of the Supreme Court, Adelino Muchanga.

On that occasion, the PR urged the Niassa government to strengthen control of the land and river borders with Tanzania and Malawi, which could turn the province into a corridor for supplying drugs to countries in the region and the rest of the world.
