The country's current Highway Code (Código de Estrada - CE) is under review and new measures could be approved this year. One of the innovations planned is a reduction in speed limits, aimed at reducing the number of road accidents.
The reform of speed limits will affect towns and cities. The maximum speeds to be set are still unknown. In the current EC, it's 120 km/h on main roads outside cities and 60 km/h inside cities.
It also provides for the application of new sanctioning measures for drivers who commit offenses. The modernization of driving in the country is also planned to incorporate the new instrument.
"The new EC could also provide for additional sanctions that could lead to the seizure of driving licenses or vehicle registration, as well as increased fines," said a source close to the matter quoted by the newspaper. News.
