The President of the Mozambican Federation of Road Transport Associations (FEMATRO) said today that the new transport fare that was approved weeks ago by the Government will not be reflected in the pocket of the passenger.
"What will happen is that the passenger will continue to pay the same amount and the remainder the state will put in," Castigo Nhamane explained in telephone contact with MZNews.
For this to happen, advanced the responsible of FEMAFRO, the State will implement an electronic payment system in the means of transport. Passengers will have to pay for transport using a card. In other words, cash payment will no longer be the way used in the transport system.
Nhamane also said that the government is currently in the process of organizing and preparing for all passenger transport to be able to migrate to the electronic system.
"This will have to include the entire passenger transportation system, including the 15-seat mini buy," he told MZNews.
Questioned about the viability of this system considering the reality of transportation in the country, Nhamane said that "as a transporter I hope that the system works, but as a Mozambican I have many doubts given the economic conditions of our passengers".
The new "chapa" tariff approved at the end of last month could begin to take effect as of next September.
