The region of Chimbazo, on the border between the districts of Luabo and Mopeia, experienced an eventful day yesterday. A group of alleged Naparama clashed with the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) force, which will have resulted in four murdered police officers.

The confrontation is part of the post-election conflict that has already resulted in 115 more deaths.

It all started when a peaceful demonstration was interrupted by gunfire from the UIR. In response, the Naparamas, known for their community defense organization and spiritual beliefs, retaliated with traditional weapons, azagaias, machetes and sticks.

The confrontation resulted in the death of four UIR agents and the kidnapping of a fifth, as well as the total destruction of the district headquarters of the FRELIMO party in Sangaraza, which was set on fire by the demonstrators. (CIP Elections)
