The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, expressed his dissatisfaction with the current level of management at Mozambique Airlines (LAM) and stressed the need for a change in leadership and thinking.
The reaction comes six months after Fly Modern Ark (FMA) intervened in the national flag carrier's restructuring process.
Magala believes that the national flag company has the potential to make the Mozambican nation proud.
For the Minister, the operator's performance is below desirable levels, so the new leadership is still below the level of challenges facing LAM.
He noted that LAM lacks strengthened leadership, a creative mindset, transparency and focus. But he also recognizes that, with the intervention of the FMA, LAM has made significant progress, such as the introduction of new national and international routes. And, despite the increase in passenger flow, he is still not satisfied.
"I'm still not satisfied. I think LAM has to have a very respectable image. It has to be a point of pride. It has to be Mozambican. We're not there yet, but the steps that have been taken since April are to be commended," said the Minister, quoted by Radio Mozambique.
In the view of Magala, who was speaking from Blantyre, Malawi, the biggest secret to leveraging the company "is changing minds, attitudes and the leadership of this process". He said that these are fundamental processes "for us to be able to see the change we want to see, and this is happening, but we're not there yet".
FMA is the South African company hired by the Mozambican state to lead the LAM restructuring process. The foreign company says it has already reduced LAM's debts from 402 million dollars to around 290 million dollars. FMA's Project Director promises to explain the company's current financial situation in December or January.
