Nampula already has a support and treatment clinic for drug users

Nampula já conta com uma clínica de apoio e tratamento de usuários de drogas

Since last Friday (28), the city of Nampula has had a support and treatment clinic for drug users, an initiative that is expected to remove many young people from the world of drug use in the largest urban center in northern Mozambique..

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony of the clinic, the Secretary of State in Nampula province, Plácido Pereira, said that the number of users of various drugs in the province, despite registering a small reduction from 3986 in 2023 to 3721 in 2024, is still a concern.

"So this treatment unit is intended to treat heroin users, whose annual target for diagnosis and treatment is around 400 patients and so far 37 users have registered, 26 of whom are in treatment," said the government official, quoted by the portal IkweliHe also called for society to be involved in discouraging drug use.

Representing the Ministry of Health, Selma Adom, acknowledged that drugs are a concern in the country and the most worrying age groups are young people of working age who, for various reasons, engage in substance abuse.

"The National Directorate of Public Health is concerned because it affects the individual and also the community in general. We have mapped places with higher incidences, such as isolated remote areas and schools, and that's why there have been several initiatives to raise awareness of this problem among the school community and the surrounding area," said Selma Adom.

In the same vein, the director of the Foundation for Community Development (FDC), Adelino Chirindza, said that the country has only two (02) support and treatment centers for drug users, out of a total of four (04) that are to be set up.
