The National Roads Administration (ANE), Nampula delegation, defends the need to review the construction standards for bridges and roads, in order to make the infrastructure more resilient to climatic events.
According to the ANE delegate in Nampula, Mateus Espírito Santo, quoted by the Rigor newspaperAccording to the source, the roads and bridges in the province are not prepared to withstand the cyclical events that the country has faced. The source said that proof of this are the road and bridge closures that the province has suffered in the last four months, due to cyclones Dikeledi, Chido and Jude.
"At the moment, we're doing emergency replacement work to guarantee accessibility. But in the future, we will have to carry out a study, so that construction processes that are suitable for climate change are preserved," said Espírito Santo.
For the source, the damage that is occurring today stems from these climate changes, "because the rain cycles have become almost annual and the damage from them is very severe". "So our road sizing parameters have to be revised. That's the effort the sector is making," he added.
In the same publication, the delegate said that during the cyclones in the province, four of the 11 roads in Nampula had their traffic conditioned and/or cut off.
Noteworthy are the Nampula-Namialo road, Namialo-Rio Lúrio, on the border between Nacarôa and Eráti, the N104 road, Nametil-Angoche and Rapale-Mecubúri. Of this number of roads, the Namialo-Namapa section is the one that continues to have traffic restrictions due to the destruction of the bridge over the Monapo River on the same road.
