The municipalities of Maputo, Matola and Boane, which make up the triangle of the Greater Maputo region, have pledged to contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change in their municipalities.
The commitment was made last Wednesday in the country's capital, during the launch of the Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Framework (SEACAP) for the Maputo Metropolitan Area.
The aim of the project is to provide technical assistance to municipalities in the Maputo metropolitan area to better deal with the extreme weather events to which they are exposed.
On the occasion, the UN˗Habitat representative, Sandra Rock, recalled that "natural disasters cannot be avoided, but better preparation to deal with the situation can be guaranteed".
For her part, the Spanish Cooperation representative, Irene Morat, quoted by Terra magazine, stressed the importance of the initiative to encourage new and future generations to create the conditions for adaptation and resilience to climate change.
The Mayor of Boane, Jacinto Loureiro, an area that during the last rainy season was ravaged by floods that caused deaths and displaced people, pledged to embrace the initiative.
The same commitment was made by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Municipal Water and Sanitation Company of Matola, Bernardo Dramus, and by the Councillor for Territorial Planning, Environment and Urbanization in the Municipality of Maputo, Silva Magaia, stressing that the initiative is a key tool for climate resilience.
The initiative comes at a time when the municipalities of Maputo, Matola and Boane, are cyclically affected by floods that cause grief and destruction.
