The Maputo City Council this morning called on society not to join the street demonstrations called by the PODEMOS presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane.
Speaking at a press conference aimed at addressing the impact of the demonstrations on Maputo city, Mayor Rasaque Manhique stressed that the streets should not be taken over by the demonstrations, as these actions "only aggravate even more the people who are already suffering from flooding and other problems".
"We want to appeal to everyone not to encourage these practices, not least because when we're on the streets, we're all subject to various risks," said Manhique, adding that the streets are not places for demonstrations.
According to Rasaque Manhique, "when the barricades don't allow residents to get to hospitals, when they don't allow residents to get to school, when the barricades don't even allow residents to go and bury their family member, it's already a humiliation".
Yesterday, presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, through his official account on the social network Facebook, called for a new phase of electoral contestation lasting a week, starting on Wednesday, in all neighborhoods of the country, with a stoppage of car traffic from 8am to 4pm.
"All the neighborhoods are very active. They're going to concentrate on the neighborhoods and the main avenues that cross our neighborhoods - we don't need to travel far - putting up our posters," said Venâncio Mondlane.
Venâncio Mondlane does not recognize the announced results of the general elections of October 9 and is therefore demanding, through these protests, that the electoral truth be restored.
