Wife of soldier detained in barracks asks for support for her husband's release

Mulher de militar detido no quartel pede apoio para a soltura do marido

The wife of a serviceman from the Armed Forces and Defense of Mozambique (FADM) is asking for support to get her husband released. He has allegedly been detained for about a week at the Navy barracks in Catembe, Maputo city.

In a video, the woman said that she had only been allowed to visit her husband. She said that he is weak and has suffered psychological torture.

"He's been detained since the day he made the video. I don't have access to him. To get information about him I need to talk to his colleagues. And I only saw him one day and realized that he was weak. He's not doing well psychologically, he's suffering psychological torture. Please, whoever is in charge, I'm asking for help," she cried out.

The soldier, identified as Francisco Carlos Bonde, was reportedly arrested after recording a video in which he criticized the use of police force against demonstrators, and lamented the low pay conditions of the Mozambique Republic Police.

"I feel sorry for them. How long will they be licking their boots?" he asked.

He criticized the Frelimo regime for betting on entities of dubious capacity to lead important pillars of the Mozambican state. He revealed that the party hires young people to create vandalism.

He warned of the possibility of a State of Emergency being declared in the country. "We're not going to give that space," he said.

"I'm with the people because I am the people. We're organizing the country. This is a country of young people, brother. Now is the time to put fear aside and unite as Mozambicans. If we're going to save Mozambique, let's all go," said the detained soldier.

"In our country we have the right to freedom of expression and he has that too, even though he's in the military... he's not guilty, and he only said what was in his heart. That doesn't make him a criminal," noted his wife.
