Portuguese poet, essayist and literary critic Eugénio Lisboa, born in Loureço Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique, in 1930, died today of an illness in a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, at the age of 93.
João Lisboa, his son, confirmed the information to the Portuguese press.
Eugénio Lisboa studied Electrical Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, and before returning to Mozambique he formed his important friendship with José Régio. In Mozambique, where he was always culturally active, he also worked in the oil sector - which took him to France as a manager. He was a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, in the Class of Letters and was awarded the degrees of Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique (1980), Commander of the Order of Merit (1993) and Commander of the Ancient, Noble and Enlightened Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada, of Scientific, Literary and Artistic Merit (2019). The essayist was also cultural counselor at the Portuguese embassy in London between 1978 and 1995. It was there that he was decorated as a lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order. Read more...
