Mozambique prepares to access climate change assistance fund

Moçambique prepara-se para aceder ao fundo de assistência para as mudanças climáticas

Mozambique is preparing the first biennial transparency report (BTR) and the third national communication to apply for the climate loss and damage fund, which aims to guarantee technical assistance to the countries most affected by climate change, within the framework of COP 27.

A publication by News says that the government, through the Ministry of Land and Environment (MTA), is developing the two documents under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which calls on member states to communicate on observed climate phenomena, impacts and mitigation and adaptation measures.

The information was provided by the national director of Climate Change, Jadwiga Massinga, who was speaking recently in Maputo at the seminar to launch the two instruments that will enable access to funding and respond to the Paris agreement, which limits global warming to a temperature of less than 2°C.

"The national communications are drawn up every four years and the BTR every two to show the actions taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other activities that harm the environment. They also serve to produce relevant information for the formulation of sustainable and resilient development policies, strategies, programs and projects," explained Jadwiga Massinga.

According to the same publication, the inventory also helps to produce information on the state of exploitation of natural resources and to identify needs for improving national statistics, including the collection, management and storage of data and technical and institutional capacity to carry out environmental studies.

"We will now report on adaptation measures, including good practices, priorities, needs and gaps, in order to contribute to the global balance sheet under Article 14 of the Paris Agreement. Thus, every four years we must present the BTRs to be submitted from December 2024, containing information on the national inventory of greenhouse gas emissions in the country," he said.
