Mozambique considers introducing digital driver's licenses

Moçambique pondera introduzir cartas de condução digitais

The regulatory authorities of the transport system in Mozambique are studying the possibility of producing and issuing digital driving licenses, according to the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications.

"We have some intentions of introducing issues that have to do with the moment. We're practically in the fourth industrial revolution. We're already at a point where digital already makes a difference in our lives, and we think there are some elements that if we introduce can help improve road accidents, including, for example, issues that have to do with the production of a digital driving license and other control mechanisms," revealed Amilton Alissone, quoted on Wednesday by STV.

Speaking about the high number of traffic accidents in the country and possible measures to reduce road accidents, he said there was a plan to continue revising the Highway Code.

"What we think is that the Highway Code should be adjusted to the situation we find ourselves in. Of course, the Highway Code has been in force for more than ten years," he said.

He said that the country had recorded more than 2,000 road accidents in the nine months of this year, with an average of one death per accident.

"In the first nine months of this year, we had 658 deaths resulting from 679 traffic accidents and approximately 1,500 serious and minor injuries," he said.
