Mozambique may classify "Casa de Ferro" as a cultural heritage site and rehabilitate two museums

Moçambique pode classificar “Casa de Ferro” como património cultural, e reabilitar dois museus

The Mozambican government is going ahead with the classification as Cultural Heritage of the century-old "Casa de Ferro" in Maputo, designed by the "Eiffel" house, a source from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced today.

The classification proposal was approved on Thursday at a meeting of the National Council for Cultural Heritage, including the requalification of the Natural History Museum and the Currency Museum, on the grounds that they represent "added value for conservation and preservation" and for "tourist and cultural attraction", according to the same source.

The "Casa de Ferro" (Iron House) is a prefabricated, three-storey building built in Belgium and constructed in Mozambique in 1892 to house the residence of the governor-general of Portugal, which never happened due to the high temperatures inside.

The building, which used to be the Geographical Museum before Mozambique's independence, now houses the services of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Maputo. (RTP)
