Mozambique to celebrate Nyusi's departure from power

Moçambique deve celebrar a saída de Nyusi do poder

Tomorrow, rather than celebrating Daniel Chapo's ascent to the Presidency of the Republic, the main thing will be to celebrate Filipe Nyusi's fall from power, says the Director of the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD).

"I think Mozambicans should celebrate this issue of Nyusi's departure, so that we can reorganize and organize the country," said the social activist.

According to Adriano Nuvunga, during Filipe Nyusi's ten years in power, Mozambique has taken a step back on the path towards its development goals.

Nyusi's years in power, Nuvunga recalled, were marked by assassinations and fraudulent elections.

"We've had ten years of murders of human rights defenders, of attacks on public intellectuals, of the creepiest governance in living memory in our country," he noted.

In the recent past, there were rumors that Filipe Nyusi was preparing conditions to extend his stay in the Presidency of the Republic. This would include declaring a State of Siege as a result of a possible escalation of terrorism in Cabo Delgado province or, in recent times, the post-election demonstrations, marked by the deaths of hundreds of civilians. However, he himself said at a meeting of the Frelimo Central Committee, after Daniel Chapo had been chosen as a candidate for the presidential elections, that this would put an end to speculation about a third term.

The inauguration of Daniel Chapo as the next President of the Republic of Mozambique is scheduled for Wednesday 15th.

"So it's important that we are united to celebrate Nyusi's departure from power," he said.
