Mozambique disburses about USD 600 million annually for grain imports

Mozambique disburses annually about 600 million dollars, for the import of cereals, being 50% of the amount destined to the purchase of rice, in order to meet the demand of the national market.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, who made the announcement last week at the Regadio do Baixo Limpopo in Gaza, noted that the country consumes about five hundred thousand tons of rice annually.

"In this campaign, the country expects to produce about 239 thousand tons, which corresponds to an increase of 15% compared to the previous campaign. In the specific case of Gaza, the production this year will reach 71 thousand tons, therefore, when we talk about the importance of this geographical area in our country, we can already affirm that the dream of transforming Gaza into a production reference, is beginning to come true", he said.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Celso Correia, announced on the occasion that the country projects to achieve self-sufficiency in rice production by 2030.
