Mozambique approves strategy to combat chronic malnutrition by 2030

Yesterday, Tuesday (13), the Mozambican government approved the Food and Nutrition Security Policy (PESAN) 2024-2030 and the Strategy for its implementation, an instrument aimed at improving livelihoods, economic productivity, longevity of citizens' lives and the country's development and prosperity.

The documents approved yesterday at another ordinary session of the Council of Ministers establish food and nutrition priorities for the implementing sectors and other relevant stakeholders, through effective multi-sector collaboration and integration.

Speaking at a press conference, the spokesman for the Council of Ministers, Filimão Suaze, acknowledged that chronic malnutrition in children under five, and food insecurity in the country, is still a major problem affecting health and economic development.

Cited by AIMFilimão Suaze recalled that in 2014, the index of chronic malnutrition in children under five stood at 43%, and in 2019-20 it was 39%. In 2022 and 2023, the index stood at 37%. "So it's this data and others combined that mean we have to think from strategy to strategy in order to improve," he said.
