Mozambicans killed in building wall collapse in the South African city of Durban

Moçambicanos mortos na queda de muro de edifício na cidade sul-africana de Durban

At least two Mozambican workers died on Saturday after a wall collapsed in a building in Phoenix, northeast of the South African city of Durban.

According to a Radio Mozambique citing close sources, the incident occurred when the two Mozambicans, aged 27 and 29, were digging a ditch to reroute the drainage system.

Emergency teams were sent to the scene to remove the bodies and begin investigations into the causes of the wall collapse.

Meanwhile, the Mozambican consulate in Durban said it was in contact with the local authorities to establish the identities of the two Mozambicans who died in the incident.

This was announced by the Mozambican Consul in Durban, Isac Matola, who stressed that "all relevant information is needed to guide consular assistance to the families of the victims of Saturday's incident".

In May last year, a five-storey building collapsed in the coastal town of George, in the Western Cape, killing around 70 people, including Mozambican workers.
