The US government says it is concerned about the situation in Mozambique and calls on all stakeholders to refrain from violence and engage in meaningful collaboration to restore peace and promote unity.
The Joe Biden administration's position comes after the Constitutional Council (CC) confirmed on Monday (23) the victory of the Frelimo candidate in the presidential elections and the ruling party in the legislative and provincial elections on October 9.
"The United States calls on all stakeholders to commit to serious electoral and institutional reforms to ensure Mozambique's future as a true multi-party democracy," says the State Department note, signed by its spokesman Matthew Miller.
Cited by VOAMatthew Miller recalls that "civil society organizations, political parties, the media and international observers, including those from the United States, have cited significant irregularities in the tabulation process, as well as concerns about the lack of transparency throughout the electoral period," adding that the "United States calls on all stakeholders to refrain from violence and engage in meaningful collaboration to restore peace and promote unity."
For Washington, "Mozambicans deserve elections that are free of violence and reflect the will of the people".
