The Superior Council of the Public Prosecutor's Office has dismissed and expelled six members of staff, including magistrates, bailiffs and assistant bailiffs, for committing various illegal acts, it said in a statement.

The magistrate, in the category of 2nd class public prosecutor, was removed from the staff of the Maputo City Public Prosecutor's Office for abuse of powers for his own benefit and to the detriment of others.

He "irregularly processed a criminal case against a foreign national, accused of international drug trafficking, to the detriment of justice and the Mozambican state".

Likewise, a judicial officer, in the category of District Law Clerk, was dismissed from the staff of the Provincial Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Manica, for using his functions to his own benefit and to the detriment of third parties, by requesting and receiving money to facilitate the speed of proceedings.

The panel also decided to expel Judicial Officers and Assistants to Judicial Officers, with the categories of Provincial Law Clerk, Assistant Law Clerk, District Judicial Clerk and District Diligence Officer, from the staff of the Provincial Prosecutor's Offices of the Republic of Gaza and Tete, for the use of their functions for their own benefit and to the detriment of third parties, by requesting and receiving monetary values, to facilitate the speed of proceedings and the filing of cases under investigation and for the subtraction and use of seized counterfeit foreign banknotes.

"As there are indications that a criminal offense has been committed, the CSMMP ordered that copies be taken and sent to the Public Prosecutor's Office, so that the appropriate criminal proceedings could be initiated," it reads.
