Chinese mining company in Mozambique offers poor working conditions. Employees are on strike

Employees of the Chinese mining company Ding Sheng Minerals, which exploits heavy sands in the Chibuto district of Gaza province, on Thursday temporarily shut down their activities due to poor working conditions.

The strike is expected to last 15 days, but will only be called off when the employer meets the workers' demands.

Among the requirements is the observance of occupational health and safety measures, with emphasis on the provision of protective equipment and medical and medication assistance.

The workers, most of whom are from the Chibuto district, are also demanding respect from their supervisors (Chinese), who constantly threaten them with dismissal, as well as making salary deductions without complying with the labor legislation.

The strikers are also demanding that the employer make a clear distinction between the categories of master and assistant workers; hand over copies of the work contracts; pay the previously agreed allowances; and improve transport conditions.
