Rwandan military in Maputo: CDD makes progress in gathering evidence

Militares do Ruanda em Maputo: CDD avança na recolha de evidências

The Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) is looking for evidence of the presence of Rwandan troops in the Mozambican capital, according to Adriano Nuvunga.

According to the NGO's Director General, however, there is still no data to back up these suspicions, despite the fact that images have already been circulated that attest to popular distrust.

Such "evidence" illustrates: military personnel at an airport in the north about to board a flight to Maputo. The purpose was to "support" the national police in suppressing the demonstrations; "Rwandan" soldiers protecting the Ministries of the Republic of Mozambique, "dressed in those clothes, they looked like suicide bombers. But they have the insignia of our police, of our flag".

In addition, suspicions have already led to the idea that there are Rwandan military personnel escorting the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.

In an interview with DW yesterday, Nuvunga stressed that if the "infiltration" of Rwandan troops into Mozambique's democratic affairs is confirmed, they must be held accountable.

"It's difficult to get close to a military person... Nobody has gotten close to those people to see if they speak Portuguese or not. But some of the troops protecting even the President of the Republic, we saw them speaking in Swahili, we heard them speaking a language other than Portuguese. This feeds this suspicion on two levels: that the Rwandan troops are in Maputo, and if they are here, we will mobilize all Mozambicans, we will collect evidence to bring these people to criminal accountability. This idea is growing that the Rwandan military presence in Mozambique is serving as President Nyusi's private army," he said.

This led to a social media page of Rwandan President Paulo Kagame being "flooded" with messages from Mozambican citizens denouncing the suspicions.

The Rwandan government, through its spokeswoman, Yolande Makolo, rejected the allegationsHe said that the troops were only fighting terrorism in Cabo Delgado province.

Nuvunga criticized the fact that the Rwandan government had not revealed: the number and location of Rwandan military personnel on Mozambican territory; the whereabouts of Rwandan journalists kidnapped by the Mozambican police in Maputo, in close collaboration with the Rwandan police; the identity of the perpetrators of the murders of Rwandan refugees in Mozambique because they were being persecuted in Rwanda.
