The Mozambican Medical Association (AMM) took to the streets today to march in repudiation of the waves of violence resulting from the demonstrations. There have already been 108 shootings and 16 deaths.

"On behalf of all health professionals, we want to say enough with the shootings, violence, and that we can unite to save ourselves and get the country out of this difficult situation in terms of public safety and violence," he said.

According to AMM spokesman Napoleão Viola, doctors are dealing with a heavy workload, with cases of doctors going overtime and others interrupting their rest hours to attend to emergencies.

"Many doctors are being asked to leave home and go and support the teams that are on duty. It's a huge amount of pressure. On the other hand, the colleagues who are on duty are finding it difficult to surrender, because those who were supposed to do so haven't done so due to the transportation problems. On the other hand, those who are there can't get to their homes," all "because the roads are blocked," he noted.

In this sense, the class is calling for the demonstrations to take place peacefully in order to reduce the number of incidents.

According to Viola, there have already been 108 shootings and 16 deaths as a result of the demonstrations.

"Unfortunately, this is a situation that is occurring in our health units.  We have all the data on what is happening at national level. That's why we think it would be worthwhile to hold this march, this demonstration for society as a whole," he said.

Last week, he said that ten cases of people killed during the demonstrations showed clear intentions to shoot to kill on the part of the Mozambique Republic Police.
