The Minister of Economy and Finance considers it essential to reaffirm the commitment to financing so that TotalEnergies can resume its gas production project in the Rovuma basin, in the north of the country, later this year.
Max Tonela was speaking at a meeting with funding agencies involved in supporting TotalEnergies' project in the Rovuma basin, Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique.
"Export credit agencies are instrumental in this process, because they must ensure approval in time for the project to restart," said Max Tonela, adding that "TotalEnergies is taking steps to resume its project before the end of this year."
Quoted by Lusa, he said that the project was a milestone in the history of Mozambique, Africa and the world, because "it will contribute [to] fair energy security during an unprecedented period of global crisis".
It should be remembered that TotalEnergies suspended its project in Cabo Delgado following an armed attack near the project's facilities in March 2021, in the context of the armed violence that has been carried out by insurgents in the province.
For his part, the chairman of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanné, recently announced that the company was hoping to relaunch the project before the end of the year.
The province of Cabo Delgado has been facing armed insurgency for six years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
