Frelimo march: activists condemn wave of violent demonstrations

Marcha da Frelimo: Militantes condenam onda de manifestações violentas

The Frelimo party took to the streets and avenues of the capital Maputo today to march for the supposed victory of the party and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, in the October 9 elections.

Members of the political group repudiated the wave of violence and the looting of public and private property during the demonstrations called by Venâncio Mondlane on the grounds that they were for the restoration of electoral truth.

The city's Secretary of State, Vicente Joaquim, said that the violent demonstrations, which have been taking place since October 21, do nothing to help the development of our country.

"Enough violence, vandalism and looting! We want to express our rejection of these phenomena. But we're also here to say that we won and we won well. Victory is Daniel Chapo's," he said.

On the other hand, António Niquice said that the first message that the Frelimo march is intended to convey is that demonstrating is a constitutional right.

"We, in a didactic and unscrupulous way, strictly comply with what the law prescribes. We are demonstrating here to say, above all, no more violence. We want unity among Mozambicans. We are for concord and national unity," he said.
