Maputo: Victim Who Lost Eye in Police Repression Asks for 350 Million Meticals in Compensation

Maputo: Vítima que perdeu olho na repressão policial pede indemnização de 350 milhões de meticais

Inocêncio Manhique, the 34-year-old who lost his eye during the violent police repression of the march in honor of rapper Azagaia, filed a criminal complaint yesterday demanding 350 million meticais in compensation.

The criminal report was submitted to the Attorney General's Office in Maputo and to the Public Prosecutor's Office, Manhique told MZNews in a telephone conversation.

"We're asking for 350 million meticais in compensation," Manhique explained to MZNews, adding that "this amount is too little considering the damage caused... we wanted 500 million meticais." "The eye is irreparable damage... I suffered not only in the eye, but also in the jaw area. I suffer from headaches every day," he said.

The victim talks about the difficulties he has been going through every day for three months after an episode that left him blind in one eye.

"My life changed from water to wine. It's never been the same again. Even now I can't find myself," he said. "My wife has helped me a lot in many ways," he said.

Due to the social activism she has embraced since March 18, the victim also says that she has suffered threats from all corners.

As well as demanding compensation, the criminal complaint submitted yesterday asks the Mozambican Attorney General's Office to identify and hold criminally responsible the agents who fired the tear gas shells that hit the victims.

On March 18, Mozambican police officers claimed to have "superior orders", which have never been clarified, to disperse groups that were authorized to hold peaceful marches in various parts of the country in homage to the social intervention rapper Azagaia, who died of illness nine days earlier.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi announced investigations into the police action at the marches, considering, however, that the authorities had information that there were "infiltrators" who wanted to achieve "other goals" with the tribute to the rapper Azagaia and regretting the disturbances that took place.
