Maputo: Roads barricaded. Plates paralyzed. Violent police. Real bullets. Tear gas

Maputo: Estradas barricadas. Chapas paralisados. Polícia violenta. Balas verdadeiras. Gás lacrimogénio

Strike takes Maputo city by storm. In the early afternoon, what was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration turned into chaos.

This morning, Renamo party leader Venâncio Mondlane led a march in the city. During his speech before actually starting the march, he announced the next steps in the demonstrations which, until then, "had been peaceful". But in response, his supporters and the party said they wanted to start more forceful demonstrations today.

Mondlane called early on for skirmishes to be avoided, but the opposite was seen.

Some avenues were barricaded with burning tires, such as the intersection of Olof Palme and Emília Daússe avenues, near the Juvenile Court.

On Avenida 24 de Julho, the Republic of Mozambique Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas. There were also iron bullets, the so-called "real" ones. Videos on social media show plainclothes policemen firing real bullets at Avenida Eduardo Mondlane and Albert Litule.

The angry population is preventing passenger transport vehicles from circulating on some avenues. A video shows one fleeing from objects being thrown at it on Avenida Eduardo Mondlane.

The march of Venâncio Mondlane, who claimed victory in the Maputo municipal council with 53% votes, was intended to pass through the Constitutional Council.
