The man who fired two shots into the air on the night of November 15, in the Golf Residence condominium during the demonstrations called by Venâncio Mondlane, is a lawyer and says he did it to safeguard his physical integrity and that of his partner.
"When I was leaving my house, a hundred meters (100m) after the entrance gate, I was approached by demonstrators on the public highway, and although I identified myself as a lawyer by presenting my professional card, my partner and I were assaulted," says Abdul Nurdin, in a note that MZNews had access to.
"My car was vandalized with stones, the windshield was smashed and they also took my professional license," said the lawyer.
In the note, the lawyer states that the demonstrators followed him to the gate of his residence, which caused a great deal of panic, at which point he fired two shots into the air in order to drive them away.
"I fired two shots upwards, without hitting any object or person, in order to discourage the protesters from approaching the condominium and thus disperse them," he said in a statement.
As a result of the actions of the "protesters", Abdul Nurdin says he saw his partner being beaten up inside the condominium and has cuts on his head from the stones being thrown.
In the document, the lawyer also says that he has reported what happened to the President of the Mozambican Bar Association, and that he is willing to collaborate in whatever is necessary to fully clarify the facts that occurred on the date and time mentioned above.
Meanwhile, in another press release, residents of the same condominium distanced themselves from the incident and reiterated that this type of behavior does not reflect the values of the condominium's residents.
"The policy of good neighborliness is the essential principle of our community, promoting harmonious coexistence, mutual respect and a safe environment for all residents, regardless of the external context," reads the document.
The residents also say that "the demonstrations have generated tension, but "we believe that respect for the rules of conduct and the search for dialogue are fundamental for maintaining peace and security in the space in which we live".
Mozambique is going through a period of demonstrations in protest against the election results of October 9, which gave victory to the Frelimo party and its candidate, Daniel Chapo.
