The CTA - Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique has expressed its opposition to the "proposed general strike" that is due to take place this Monday, October 21.
At a press conference held today in Maputo City, the members of the CTA, in addition to considering political issues to be mixed, repudiated this fact and called on all companies not to join.
"Therefore, the CTA, on behalf of its members, strongly repudiates and condemns the alleged call for a nationwide demonstration, characterized by the paralysis of all economic and socio-professional services and activities, in alleged protest against alleged irregularities registered during the electoral process whose validation and proclamation of the respective results is still awaiting a pronouncement from the competent authorities," said the vice president of the CTA, Prakash Prehlad.
The CTA warns that a nationwide stoppage of production and business activity would result in enormous economic and social damage, of which the working class and their families would be the main victims, taking into account the consequences on the cost of living, the impact on the activity and cash flow of economic and production units, which would limit the ability of employers to meet their wage obligations to their workers and the ability of the market to meet the essential needs of citizens.
The CTA is calling on the defense and security forces to provide the necessary security for business enterprises throughout the country, as these are often targeted by protesters.
The CTA itself is working to raise awareness among its members so that they can focus on their work, particularly at this time of year, when demand for various products begins to grow, coupled with the need to prepare for the festive season.
