At least 20 people died and another four suffered injuries, ranging from serious to minor, on Monday (24), victims of a road accident that occurred on National Road number six (N6), in the area of Cafumpe, in the district of Gondola, Manica province, central Mozambique.
The accident took place at around 1pm and involved a passenger car and a long-distance truck going in opposite directions. When they reached the Cafumpe area, they collided head-on. Of the fatalities, 19 died at the scene of the accident and one at the Chimoio Provincial Hospital (HPC).
In addition to the loss of human life, there was extensive damage to the two vehicles.
The long-haul truck was carrying goods from the port city of Beira, in Sofala province, while the passenger car was bound for Gondola.
According to a AIMThe head of the Public Relations department at the Manica Provincial Police Command explained that the traffic accident was caused by a failure to observe basic traffic rules.
"At the scene there were 19 fatalities and five light and serious injuries. The two vehicles were destroyed. Among the fatalities were three minors who were traveling with their families," explained Mouzinho Manasse.
