The national soccer team (Mambas) is already on Algerian soil for Tuesday's clash against Algeria, which could decide the isolated leader of group G for qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The two teams lead the group with 12 points.
On their arrival in the Algerian capital, the Mambas were welcomed by the Mozambican ambassador, Eduardo Namburete, who assured them of his support.
"We are extremely hopeful. We hope that the same energy we had in Egypt, we will continue with that energy here and we also promise our applause, our whistles, the support of the Mozambicans living here in Algeria and also the community of the SADC country, who have already expressed their interest in supporting our national team during this game," he said.
Namburete also said that around 500 fans are expected to support the Mambas in Algeria.
"They are mainly Mozambican students here in Algeria, but in addition to Mozambican students and other Mozambican residents, we have the support of the community of SADC countries," he told the Mozambican press.
After their victory against Uganda, the Mambas now have the great challenge of beating the "favorites" Algeria and continuing their dream of reaching the 2026 World Cup.
Chiquinho Conde also believes in qualifying for the World Cup, but prefers to keep his feet firmly on the ground. Conde says the game against Algeria is one to enjoy.
"We're going to focus on what our tasks are, always believe in our process, because that's what got us here, our dream is still intact, but we know it's going to be an arduous task and we want to live up to it," he said, while acknowledging the Algerian team's favoritism.
"We know perfectly well that Algeria have been the number one contenders in this group from the start, but we're in the same position in terms of points, and anything can happen.
We're going to have fun, we're not going to take this as a big responsibility or as if it's life or death, but we're going to enjoy it and that's the only way we can get a good result," he argued.
As for the preparations for the game, the Mambas held their first training session on Algerian soil on Saturday and the players are already looking ahead to Tuesday's clash.
