More than 200,000 cashew seedlings, which are in the nursery for the production of this vegetative material, in Nanduli, Ancuabe district, in Cabo Delgado, are at risk of being lost, due to the lack of assistance, caused by the flight of technical personnel, since the terrorist attack of June 5th.o.
The nursery, located about 70 km from the village of Ancuabe, was visited this Wednesday, by the Secretary of State in Cabo Delgado, António Supeia, who, on the occasion, oriented the Mozambique Almond Institute to find ways to avoid the loss of the plants.
"Think of some alternative solution and you should be quick about it," Supeia advised, quoted by the newspaper Notícias.
According to the Mozambique Almond Institute, there are two ways out of the problem, one is to bring the technicians back to the field, with guarantees that safety conditions are created, and the other is to transfer the seedlings to the Mariri region, where there are hydrographic conditions to guarantee the watering of the plants.
The Nanduli nursery, the largest in Cabo Delgado province, has the installed capacity to produce more than 700,000 seedlings per year.
Cabo Delgado, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, was in the past cashew nut production campaign, 2021/2022, the second largest producer of that crop, with more than 24 thousand tons, against 82 thousand tons in Nampula.
