Country's largest hospital to review criteria for admitting patients to emergency departments

Maior hospital do país vai rever critérios de admissão de pacientes nas urgências

The Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), the country's largest hospital, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and cooperation from Japan and Brazil, is developing a plan to scrutinize the admissibility of patients in the Emergency and Resuscitation Services.

The HCM sees an average of 400 patients every day, and the purpose of adopting new admission criteria is to reduce this number of patients. It is understood that there are many cases admitted to the HCM (90%), but that, most of the time, they do not justify attendance at quaternary level hospitals, i.e. central hospitals.

Quoted by NewsThe Director of the SUR, Dino Lopez, said that, first of all, there will be work with the population to encourage them to go to the health centers near their homes or workplaces.

"The project will only be implemented when it is ready, and in the meantime we will continue to attend to all patients who seek emergency services at the HCM, observing the triage criteria," he guaranteed.
