The closure of the Hulene dump will run for at least another three years, as there is no money for it, according to the Director of Salubrity of the Maputo City Council (CMCM).
In fact, according to the councillor, the closure of the dump will not be complete, as the site is expected to become a transfer center.
City council documents cited by STVIn order to close the dump, they explain that safety improvements are first needed to prevent future tragedies.
In 2019, the council invested in financing works to extend the Hulene dump for around 15 years.
Through a call for tenders, the city council hired a company to carry out work to safely close the dump. This has not yet happened.
"Closing a dump is a process, and for that we need to have another site that is being prepared," said the councillor, referring to a space that has already been identified and on which environmental impact studies are already underway.
This information has already been shared with the PGR, including the existence of funds for the construction of the Katembe landfill.
