Mozambican João Filipe Papel has become, for the first time, the first African researcher to sit on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) World Scientific Assessment Technical Committee.
João Papel has a PhD in Technological Sciences Engineering from Tokai University in Japan. He was a fellow of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) between 2020-2024 under the program called "SDG Global Leader Program for Sub-Saharan African countries".
According to a JICAWith this achievement, Mozambique became the first and only African country to be represented on the IEEE's technical scientific evaluation committee, in the category of Consumer Systems for Health Care and Well-being.
The first and only country in the community of Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP) and Southern Africa with representation on the IEEE's technical scientific evaluation committee, mainly in the Technological Consumer Community.
For JICA Mozambique, these achievements reflect the rigor and high quality standards of the selection process that the Japanese agency employs in the country when awarding scholarships to Japan, as well as the high quality of teaching at Japanese institutions. Therefore, "this recognition reaffirms JICA's commitment to excellence and empowerment through international education".
"Through our scholarship programs, JICA not only supports the academic and professional development of our scholars, but also promotes cultural and technical exchange that strengthens lasting ties between Mozambique and Japan. João's dedication and his exemplary academic and professional career reflect the success of this integrated approach," reads the publication.
