"Investigations will put an end to speculation": Nyusi condemns murder of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe

“Investigações vão acabar com especulações”: Nyusi condena assassinato de Elvino Dias e Paulo Guambe

Today in Maputo, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, lamented the murders of lawyer Elvino Dias and the leader of the Podemos party, on Friday night in Maputo, the Mozambican capital.

"As head of state, head of government and also commander-in-chief of the DSF, I vehemently repudiate that macabre act, which took good sons of the country away from their family and professional life," he lamented.

Citizens were martyred during the electoral period, while awaiting the release of the centralized results of last October's elections. Elvino Dias was at the head of several court cases against electoral offenses. And Paulo Guambe's party, including independent presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, are contesting the results already released by the district and provincial election commissions.

The police of the Republic of Mozambique point to motives of passion as the cause of the murders. However, the President of the Republic believes that only investigations can put an end to speculation.

"My government's position was immediately expressed in the press release issued by the Minister of the Interior. And the government has continued to urge the competent authorities, through the spokesperson... I reiterate my appeal to the competent authorities to do everything possible, quickly, to clarify the murders in defense and in honor of our rule of law. The rapid investigation, clarification and clarification of this act is in the full interest of the state and Mozambicans. Its clarification will allow there to be no speculation about various currents of authorship of the murder. We call on each and every one of us to cooperate, if requested to do so, and to make statements that we consider relevant," he urged.

Nyusi was reacting today to what has been described as a "political assassination". He noted that, regardless of the reasons, no human being has the right to take the life of another.

The PR expressed its solidarity with the bereaved families and wished Adassa Macuácua - the girl who was in the vehicle with Dias and Guambe - well.

On the other hand, Nyusi regretted that journalists had been targeted by the police. He recognized the legality of the right to demonstrate, in accordance with the law.

"Showing discontent while respecting the law is a right," he said.
