Around 30,000 families could face starvation in the next few days in Maputo province, as a result of the loss of 77,000 hectares of various crops, which are currently submerged as a result of the floods and inundations.
The warning was given by the director of Agriculture and Fisheries in Maputo Province, citing that "29,000 families have also been affected".
For Maria José, "it's that situation where we look at the families and what they will be able to eat from now on, food insecurity, at the moment, is a concern in Maputo Province".
She added that "29,000 hectares of pasture have been flooded, affecting around 84,000 animals, particularly cattle, which will have nothing to eat", while "around 56,000 small ruminants will also have nothing to eat.
Quoted by VOA, Maria José admitted that the 2022/2023 agricultural campaign is very compromised.
The rains also affected the fishing sector, with 64,000 boats flooded and fishponds completely submerged.
On the other hand, in Inhambane province, also in the south, the Mozambique Electricity Company (EDM), also quoted by VOA, reported that 3,300 customers are without electricity due to the passage of tropical storm Freddy, which knocked down 21 medium voltage poles and destroyed a transformer station.
No human casualties were reported, but two health centers and 24 classrooms were affected in the province.
