The districts of Chicualacuala, Mapai, Chókwè, Guijá and Chibuto, in Gaza province, southern Mozambique, could be affected by flooding in the next 24 hours due to the overflow of the Limpopo River caused by water coming from upstream countries..
According to the director of the Limpopo Basin Management Unit, Ivan Cuna, the situation will result in the isolation of some communities, the destruction of agricultural fields and the interruption of traffic.
"Of the vulnerable areas, the most important are downtown Incoluanine and Guele Guele in Muhambe, Tlhatlene in Chaimite, Sanjene in Xilembene. Some local roads, including the access roads to the village of Chivonguene, Incoluaninine, Maqueze, in Lhaquene, their situation is going to get worse," he said, quoted by the Radio Mozambique.
In view of the situation, the authorities are calling for precautionary measures to be taken when going into the river. "We also recommend that at the moment it is very dangerous to try to recover equipment in the low areas, because as the flow develops, they may be able to get in but they may not be able to get out, given the rising levels," concluded Ivan Cuna.
