The Public Prosecutor's Office opened 651 cases as a result of the post-election demonstrations, which led to the deaths of hundreds of civilians and more than 10 police officers.
"As the Public Prosecutor's Office, in compliance with the principles that govern our actions, we will continue to take action with a view to bringing criminal, civil and other charges against all those who, directly or indirectly, through various forms of criminal participation, have been breaking the law. We therefore feel it is appropriate to share that, as a result of the violent demonstrations we have experienced, 651 criminal and civil cases have so far been filed throughout the country," said the Attorney General.
According to Américo Letela, the Public Prosecutor's Office will work to ensure that all cases that resulted in deaths, bodily harm or destruction of public or private property during the demonstrations are clarified.
"To the same end, following the evasions in some prisons, which resulted in the death of some inmates, eight investigation procedures have so far been opened, which are still ongoing," they said.
Letela was speaking today in Maputo, at the opening of the Judicial Year 2025, celebrated under the slogan: "50 Years of Building the Judiciary: New Era, New Challenges".
