The heavy rain that has been falling in the Maputo region since Wednesday has affected around 14,000 people and displaced 180 families, according to an official report released today by the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD), which maintains the number of deaths at four.
Most of the people affected live in the capital and outlying neighborhoods, says the INGD, quoted by Lusa.
The data shows that the floods destroyed eight houses and flooded nearly 2,800 homes, with damage to 13 schools, 18 access roads and five health facilities.
The INGD also reports that 15 people are besieged by floods in Maputo province.
Following the storm, three temporary accommodation centers were set up, housing 180 people.
Flooding recurs at this time of year in the country, which is in the middle of the rainy season, but even so, rainfall has been higher than expected.
Since Wednesday, the accumulated rainfall has exceeded 170 millimeters, which is more than the estimated average for the whole of February in the capital region, according to the National Meteorological Institute (INAM).
Forecasts continue to point to heavy rain until Sunday.
