INGD: Road cuts hamper humanitarian assistance to those affected by Cyclone Jude

INGD: Corte de estradas dificulta assistência humanitária aos afectados pelo ciclone Jude

Humanitarian assistance for the communities and families affected by the passage of Cyclone Jude, which hit at least 17 districts in the northern province of Nampula, is raising concerns due to limited accessibility.

The rain that accompanied the cyclone caused many access roads to be cut off, riverbanks to burst their banks, flooding and waterlogging in different parts of Nampula province.

Speaking this Wednesday (12) during a session of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), the president of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD), Luísa Meque, called for caution when crossing the border so that people under siege don't risk their lives.

"This is a big challenge, we want to appeal to people who are under siege to avoid crossing because of the size of the cuts. It's important that they don't cross without safety, because it could endanger their lives," emphasized Luísa Meque.

Quoted by AIMThe official confirmed the number of deaths and injuries caused by Cyclone Jude, pointing out that the figures are still being updated.

"From the preliminary survey carried out until this morning, we have six deaths, one in Larde, another in Meconta and four in Nacala. These are the deaths confirmed by Health, there are 20 injured. This is preliminary data and the teams are still working on the ground. This information will be updated and may change in the next few hours," he said.

In the meantime, INAM is forecasting a continuation of weak to moderate, locally heavy rain in Nampula province, accompanied by thunderstorms and moderate winds, which may blow with gusts at times, with the weather expected to improve from Friday onwards.
