"There is a risk of terrorism spreading to the entire southern region," warns SADC military mission

The Southern African Joint Military Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) believes terrorism could spread throughout the southern African region if not urgently addressed.

The SAMIM spokesman said terrorism in Cabo Delgado is "multifaceted". "Terrorism in northern Mozambique can spread to the entire southern region if it is not contained and solved," Mpho Molomo said on Monday in a speech by videoconference at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) seminar in Pretoria on the intervention of foreign forces to combat insurgency in Cabo Delgado.

"The regional military intervention has allowed the region to be pacified, but it is clear that there is an external element, because some insurgents are from outside, and there is also a clear indication of some local demonstrations," he pointed out.

For the spokesperson, the "success" in the war in Cabo Delgado goes through "several approaches", namely the "reconstruction" of that region of the country, pointing out that "the Government has developed a reconstruction program that requires 300 million dollars and is working with other international partners in the implementation of that process".

Meanwhile, Mpho Molomo stressed that "wars of this kind take a long time and reconstruction is not something achievable in a short period of time."
