Strike in Xinavane: CTA condemns vandalizing the sugar mill

The President of the Confederation of Mozambique Economic Associations says that the strike by sugar mill workers in Xinavane has transcended the limits of constitutional law to acts of vandalism.

Agostinho Vuma, quoted by Radio Mozambique, said he was still amazed by the fact that the demonstrations happened in the agricultural sector, which is, by the way, the one that had the highest rate of salary readjustment.

Vuma pointed out the need for an effective resolution of the conflict, to guarantee the immediate resumption of the activities of Açucareira de Xinavane.

The General Secretary of the OTM-Central Union guarantees that it was not the workers of the sugar mill in Xinavane who provoked the riots in that administrative post.

Alexandre Munguambe says it was a fusion of labor and community problems, thus pointing the responsibility for the vandalization to the residents of Xinavane.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Labor and Social Security believes that, regardless of who the promoters of the riots are, the demonstrations originated in the factory and demands that the actors be held accountable.

Representatives of labor, employers and government were speaking last Friday in Maputo at the opening of the first ordinary plenary session of the Labor Consultative Commission.
