Government suggests consumption of cassava and sweet potato as alternatives to bread

Faced with the possible rise in the price of wheat, which could lead to an increase in the price of bread, the Minister of Industry and Commerce suggested the consumption of cassava and sweet potato as alternatives.

At the end of May, Mozambique had enough wheat in stock to produce bread, but the new orders will have "new prices, which are high," said Silvino Moreno, who was speaking on the sidelines of a seminar on the program Industrialize Mozambique.

Moreno, said that the price of wheat will increase "because of the crisis" caused by the war in Ukraine, which has led to higher costs in the import of the product, noting that Mozambique "has no way out.

In recent weeks, bakers have been warning that the rising price of wheat will consequently push up the price of bread,

Besides bread, we have cassava, sweet potato, and other products. We have to encourage people to make use of these national products," said Silvino Moreno.
