Government promises to build drainage ditches in Maputo city's critical neighborhoods

Governo promete construir valas de drenagem nos bairros críticos da cidade de Maputo

The Mozambican government says it will build drainage ditches in the critical neighborhoods of Maputo City to alleviate the suffering of the population.

The assurance was given on Thursday by the Secretary of State in Maputo City, Vicente Joaquim, during the first joint coordination committee on the project to formulate the Integrated Master Plan for Flood Disaster Risk Reduction in the cities of Maputo and Matola.

Vicente Joaquim also made it known that the construction of the drainage ditches in the neighborhoods that have not yet been identified will take place depending on the situation of the affected areas.

The Council of State Representation Services in Maputo City (CSRECM) and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are working to strengthen the capacity to prevent natural disasters in the Maputo Metropolitan area.

"The joint teams are starting the first studies this month, which will allow them to identify and assess the risk of flooding, as well as carrying out feasibility studies to propose concrete measures, combining Japanese experience with the Mozambican reality," he said.

According to the leader, the implementation project will run for approximately three years, from March 2025 to November 2027.
