Rwandan government says "there are no Rwandan troops in Maputo"

Governo do Ruanda diz que “não há tropas ruandesas em Maputo”

The spokeswoman for the Rwandan government, Yolande Makolo, wrote on Sunday (03) on the social network X, formerly Twitter, that "there are no Rwandan troops in Maputo", and that they are only in Cabo Delgado to help fight the insurgency in that Mozambican province.

Makolo was reacting to a comment that Rwandan troops were helping Mozambican forces repress protesters against the October 9 elections.

"This is a lie. There are no Rwandan troops in Maputo. The Rwandan Security Forces are deployed strictly in Cabo Delgado province, in joint operations with the Mozambican forces against Islamic extremist fighters who have been terrorizing residents in the province," emphasized Yolande Makolo, in a publication quoted by the VOA.

This weekend was also hectic in the country. Police and demonstrators clashed again on Saturday (02) in several Mozambican cities, where the opposition is contesting the results of the presidential elections, which, according to international observers, were marked by numerous irregularities.

In the capital, Maputo, hundreds of people gathered before being dispersed by the police with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Mozambique has been going through a cycle of violence since the official results of the presidential and legislative elections of October 9 were announced on October 24, which gave a large victory to Frelimo, the party that has been in power for 49 years.
